Welcome from the Chairs

In order to commemorate World Wildlife Day 2023 (https://www.un.org/en/observances/world-wildlife-day), MDPI is launching a special webinar to encourage researchers to join together, take action, and raise awareness as to how the exchange of findings facilitates efforts for wildlife conservation.

Billions of people, benefit daily from the use of wild species for food, energy, materials, medicine, recreation, inspiration and many other vital contributions to human well-being. The accelerating global biodiversity crisis, with a million species of plants and animals facing extinction, threatens these contributions to people. This webinar aims to encourage connection and collaboration among wildlife researchers and the international open access community to help fight against wildlife crime and human-induced reduction of species.

Speakers' Profiles

Prof. Dr. Timothy Beatley

Prof. Dr. Timothy Beatley is the Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable Communities, in the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning, School of Architecture at the University of Virginia, where he has taught for more than thirty years. Beatley is the author or co-author of more than twenty books, including most recently The Bird-Friendly City: Creating Safe Urban Habitats. Beatley directs the Biophilic Cities Project at UVA and is also co-founder of UVA’s Center for Design and Health, within the School of Architecture.

Dr. Miriam A. Zemanova

Dr. Miriam A. Zemanova pursued university degrees in applied ecology, biological conservation, and natural resources management, and obtained her Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution with a specialization in population genetics from the University of Bern, Switzerland. Currently, she is a Research Associate at the Environmental Sciences and Humanities Institute at the University of Fribourg. Her main research interests are wildlife welfare, humane education, and the development and implementation of non-invasive methods in conservation genetics. She has authored several publications and has provided multiple presentations on animal ethics and the 3Rs principles of responsible animal use. She is the author of the informational website, which provides information for wildlife biologists, ecologists, and conservation managers on how to implement the 3Rs within wildlife research.

Asso Prof. Dr. Kevin Cianfaglione

Kevin Cianfaglione is Associate Professor, teacher-researcher with a permanent position in our ecology and biodiversity team since December 2022.

A naturalist biologist, he is interested in the characteristics, potentiality and dynamics of habitats and vegetation; Life traits and chemical traits ; Relationship between Man and Nature; Management of space and natural resources; Traditional uses and new applications; Ancient cultivars, exotic and native species.

In his research activity, he has an overall approach to the socio-ecosystem (from natural ecosystems, to agro-ecosystems, to urban ecosystems), environmental values, but also cultural and historical values.
